Efficient Thread Dump Extraction with AWK for Java Application Performance Troubleshooting

Introduction When working on performance issues in Java applications, one often needs to analyze thread dumps. In tightly controlled environments you may not have access to any of the default tools to generate the thread dumps like jstack. In this case, typically these dumps are generated by sending a kill -3 signal to the Java process, appending the output to catalina.out. This blog post describes an efficient method to extract these thread dumps using an AWK script, making the analysis process smoother and faster. ...

Gitea Actions for Docker Builds

Introduction I’ve been using Gitea to manage my local code projects for quite a while now, and recently new functionality was added that provides a nice simple to use builder system which is very similar to Github Actions. You can read all about this feature here. Now if we combine this with Gitea’s packages functionality, we end up with a very lightweight system to handle our custom docker containers end to end. ...

Barcelona Winter Trip 2024

I had an incredible extended weekend in Barcelona, indulging in delicious foods, wandering the city, and capturing its beauty through my lens. Friday, February 2, 2024 Our journey began with an early flight from Schiphol, requiring a 5:30 AM departure from our home. Trading the 5°C rain in the Netherlands for Barcelona’s sunny 20°C was a welcome change after enduring months of winter. Our first stop? Coffee. With time to spare before our apartment check-in, we strolled to the vibrant market on La Rambla, where we were lucky enough to snag seats at Bar Boqueria. The experience was nothing short of magical: leisurely service, fresh and flavorful seafood. I would definitely return if given the chance. ...

As I pondered how to measure my success at this—I began exploring available solutions. Technically, there’s a dominant choice among music enthusiasts: Last.fm. However, my initial experience on Last.fm was marred by ads and prompts to subscribe, which was less than ideal. ...

Sous Vide Pinto Beans

As a transplanted Texan native living in Netherlands, I’ve been missing good TexMex style pinto beans. Of course we can get them in a can, or pressure cook them, however, I wanted to try something new and decided to try to sous vide them. The folks at Polyscience Culinary suggest a broad range for cooking legumes sous vide, and Anova Culinary offers their take on no-soak beans. Striking a balance between these recommendations, I decided to take a middle path, opting for the traditional approach of soaking my beans overnight, which is thought to help with digestibility and even cooking. Then, I cooked them at a precise 87°C for 6 hours, aiming for that perfect creamy texture. ...
